Mark Twain – Life On The Mississippi – First UK Edition 1883

£285.00

First UK edition, first printing of Life on the Mississippi by Mark Twaine, published by Chatto & Windus, London, in 1883. A near fine copy with annotations in red ink to the verso of the front free end paper, the red pictorial boards are generally clean and beautifully illustrated by E. H. Garrett; there are, however, some very slight marks on the rear panel, the spine is a little faded, the text blocks are very slightly toned due to poor paper stock, but are otherwise clean and free from foxing, the internal pages are also clean and free from foxing, with each of the “over 300 illustrations” present, a small former retailer’s label to the front paste-down, some pages remain uncut.

A memoir of Twain’s days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War. It is also a travel book, recounting his trip up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Saint Paul many years after the war.
