A first edition, first printing of Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman, published by Doubleday in 2001. A near fine book with the name of a former owner in red to the front free end paper, some bumping to the upper corners and a little toning to the text block. In a very good unclipped wrapper with bumping to the spine tips, chipping to the knuckles of the front and rear flap folds, a closed tear to the upper edge of rear panel and pushing to the spine tips. With a promotional ‘Checkmate’ post-card signed by the author in black ink, ‘Love, Malorie Blackman’, and contemporary lined page of note-paper written by the author similarly in black ink: ‘Dear John, Please find enclosed the requested autograph. And do please pass on my love to Ian. I wish him all the best for a very speedy recovery. Best regards, Malorie Blackman (Excuse the scrappy piece of paper but I (sic) writing this on a plane!).’
“Noughts & Crosses” is a novel by British author Malorie Blackman, set in an alternative world divided by racial and social hierarchies. It revolves around the forbidden love between Sephy, a privileged Cross (black) girl, and Callum, a disadvantaged Nought (white) boy. Their relationship faces societal prejudice, discrimination, and political turmoil. The book explores themes of racism, prejudice, and the impact of social structures on personal relationships, making it a powerful commentary on race and inequality.
