A first edition, first printing published by Methuen in 1967. 8vo. pp 87 [1] The last page Author’s Note’ lists changes to the script required by the censor -‘the corpse is inanimate and not played by an actress’ ‘for fucking substitute bleeding’. Signed by the author on the title page Joe Orton. From the library of the actor Peter O’Toole (1932 – 2013) with his posthumous bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. O’Toole was a collector of contemporary plays, owning almost all the (blue d/w) Methuen pays from this time. Orton’s signature is very rare. Original publisher’s black cloth lettered silver at the spine. Fine in complete near fine dust wrapper which is a little rubbed at head of spine and front edges. No nicks or chips.
Signed copies of this work are exceptionally scarce, as the author was murdered by his lover, Kenneth Halliwell in the same year.
