A first edition, first printing of A Parcel of Patterns by Jill Paton Walsh, published by Kestrel Books, Harmondsworth in 1983. A very good copy with a former owner’s name and address stamped to the front free end paper, the boards bound in publisher’s original white cloth with scarlet titling to the spine, light spotting to the front and rear boards and spine, heavy spotting to the top edge of front and rear boards, toning to the top edge of text block and light spotting to the remainder of the text block. In a near fine unclipped wrapper with light chipping to the heel of the spine, similarly to the knuckles of the front flap fold and upper knuckle of rear flap fold. A Parcel of Patterns is Jill Paton Walsh’s historical novel about the plague village of Eyam in 1665. Narrated by Mall Percival, a young shepherd girl, it tells how infection arrives from London in a parcel of dress patterns and how the villagers choose quarantine to protect others. Quiet, moving and beautifully restrained, it is a powerful story of fear, sacrifice, community and moral courage in the face of catastrophe.
