A first edition, first printing of Love and Friendship and Other Early Works by Jane Austen, published by Chatto & Windus, London in 1921, with preface by GK Chesterton. A near fine copy with a previous owners initials and date in blue ink to the front free end paper, the boards three quarter bound in scarlet paper with gilt debossed floral design, some rubbing to the edges of the boards, pushing to the corners and tarnishing to the foliate gilt on the rear board, with light pushing to the spine tips, a scarlet top stain to the text block, toning to the deckle edged fore-edge and bottom edge of text block, light foxing to the end papers designed with multiple coloured circular portraits by the author, a captioned tissue guard over a half-size facsimile of a page from the original manuscript.
