£250.00

First edition, first printing. Published by Hodder & Stoughton in London, 1890. Predates the American edition by 6 years. This is a near fine copy. The dark blue clothbound boards are sharp at the corners and with only slight surface wear to the panels and the spine tips. The gilt titling on the spine is without wear and bright; the publishers name in gilt has some small nicks, each smaller than 1mm in length. The text blocks are gilt on the top edge and rough cut to the side and bottom, which are slightly toned due to poor paper stock. The front pastedown carries the bookseller’s label of D. Mackenzie, Stockton, which is small and neat. The internals are sparsely foxed until the eighth page but mostly clean. It is free from previous owners inscriptions and is, overall, in near fine condition.
Focusing on his days as a smoker, J.M. Barrie takes us through his life as a smoker to his last pipe as he begins his non-smoking days. Barrie’s humorous essays about his companions, habits and quitting are sure to delight readers and where else to read them but in first edition?
