First UK edition, first printing. Published by Hamish Hamilton in London, 1951. This is a very near fine copy. The dust wrapper, superbly illustrated by Fritz Wenger, is bright throughout and not sunned at the spine. There is slight creasing to the top and tail edges and slight bumping to the tips. It has been price clipped – and has some faint staining visible from the inside, fainter to the outside. The original publishers cloth is slightly sunned at the spine, and so slightly bumped at the spine tips. The end papers are lightly foxed. The text blocks are not toned, though marginally foxed at the side edge. This copy is free from previous owner’s ink and is, overall, in very near fine condition. A lovely copy.
Partially published in serial form from 1945–46 before being novelised in 1951. Originally intended for adults, it is often read by adolescents for its themes of angst and alienation, and as a critique of superficiality in society. The novel also deals with complex issues of innocence, identity, belonging, loss, connection, sex, and depression. The main character, Holden Caulfield, has become an icon for teenage rebellion. Caulfield, nearly of age, gives his opinion on just about everything as he narrates his recent life events.
