Ernest Hemingway – Across the River and Into the Trees – First UK Edition 1950

£225.00

A first edition, first printing of Across The River and Into The Trees by Ernest Hemingway, published by Cape, London in 1950. A near fine book without inscriptions, some sunning to the spine tips, rubbing to the corners of top and rear boards, a little toning to the text block. In a very good unclipped wrapper with bumping to the spine tips, chipping to the knuckles of front and rear flap folds, toning to the spine, a small horizontal surface scrape to the titling on the front panel, a closed tear to the bottom edge of front panel.

Across the River and into the Trees by Ernest Hemingway follows Colonel Richard Cantwell, a war-weary officer visiting Venice after the Second World War. Aware of his failing health, he reflects on battle, friendship and mortality while spending time with Renata, a young Venetian countess. Their romance unfolds amid canals, restaurants and a duck hunt. Combining memories of violence with moments of tenderness, the novel portrays a soldier confronting loss and seeking meaning in love.
