A first US edition, first printing of The Darling Buds of May by H.E. Bates, published by Little, Brown and Company in 1958. A near fine book inscribed, signed and dated on the front free end paper by the author in blue ink with ghosting to the front and rear free end papers, some pushing to the fore-edge and upper corner of the front board and upper corner of the rear panel, with pushing to the head and foot of the spine, the text block with browning to the top edge and slight spotting. The unclipped wrapper with chipping to the front and rear knuckle folds and head and foot of the spine, tears to the upper and lower edge of the front panel and and small hole to the fore-edge, fading to the spine. Wrapper designed by Barbara Carrigan.

The Darling Buds of May by H.E. Bates is a delightful portrayal of the Larkin family’s idyllic rural life in 1950s England. Led by the charismatic Pop Larkin and his wife, Ma, the family embraces joy, love and freedom in their charming countryside existence. Bates intricately weaves together humour, warmth and a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures of life, creating a captivating narrative that celebrates the beauty of nature and the bonds of family.
