First edition, first US printing of A Crown of Wild Myrtle by H. E. Bates, published by Farrar, Straus and Company, New York, in 1963. This is a very good copy signed by a previous owner on the front free end paper in blue ink, the spine half bound in green cloth with gilt title, some rubbing to the name of the author and publisher on the spine, with some bumping and fading to the head and foot of the spine, the crimson cloth bound boards with some fading to the upper and lower edges, the text blocks with minor browning and spotting, internally minor damp-stain to some pages. The very good unclipped wrapper with fading to the spine, chips to the head and foot of the spine and to the knuckles of the front and rear flap folds, a chip to the upper edge of the front panel and lower edge of the rear flap, with some browning throughout. Jacket designed by Shirley Smith.

A Crown of Wild Myrtle by H.E. Bates is a tender story of love and longing, set against the backdrop of a small Greek island at the height of summer. Bates intricately weaves together the lives of the characters, exploring themes of desire, duty and societal expectations. The narrative follows the blossoming romance between a young couple, challenged by the constraints of class and tradition. With rich imagery and emotional depth, Bates crafts a timeless tale of passion and sacrifice beneath the fragrant canopy of wild myrtle.
