A first edition, first printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1975. A very good book without inscriptions, with some foxing to the page edges. In a very good unclipped wrapper with a raising of the laminate to the top of the front panel. Some rubbing to the corners.
The novel tells the story of J.B. Books, a legendary and ageing gunfighter in the American West. Books is diagnosed with terminal cancer and decides to spend his remaining days in a small town, hoping for a peaceful end. However, his reputation and the violent nature of the Old West lead to complications and conflicts with those who seek to challenge or exploit him. The novel explores themes of mortality, honour, and the changing times in the American frontier.

“The Shootist” was adapted into a film in 1976, directed by Don Siegel and starring John Wayne as J.B. Books in his final film role. The movie closely follows the novel’s storyline, with Wayne delivering a memorable performance as the ageing gunfighter facing his mortality in a changing world.
