A first edition, first printing of The Nice American by Gerald Sykes, published by John Lehmann in 1951. A near fine book with internals free from inscriptions, browning to the the text block with minor spotting to the top edge, with very slight bumping and fading to the head and foot of the spine, with some fading to the lower edge of the front panel and some scratch marks to the clothbound cover. In a near fine unclipped dust wrapper with minor tear to the knuckle of the front fold and pushing at the head of the front fold, single pin holes to the front flap, spine and rear panel, some slight internal spotting. The dust wrapper executed beautifully by John Minton.

The Nice American by Gerald Sykes is a poignant tale of human connection amidst the chaos of war. Set during World War II, the story follows the encounter between an injured American soldier and a German farmer. Despite their opposing sides, they forge an unlikely bond, transcending cultural barriers through acts of kindness and understanding. Sykes masterfully explores themes of empathy, reconciliation and the inherent goodness within humanity, offering a heart-warming reminder of compassion’s enduring power even in times of conflict.
