A first edition, first printing published by Rupert Hart-Davis in conjunction with The Book Society in 1956. A very good (or better) book with some spotting to the edges and a bump to one corner – Roger Peers ownership inscription and bookplate to the prelims. In a very good, unclipped wrapper which has none of the usual creasing and loss to the edges. Light nicking to the spine tips and corners and one patch of off-setting to the top of the front flap.

The book belonged to a previous curator of Dorchester Museum, Roger Peers, and the front pastedown has his bookplate as well as his signature on the front endpaper. Enclosed with the book is an invitation card relating to an event presumably organised by Roger Peers which featured Gerald Durrell, as well as Durrell’s business card signed by Durrell and with an inscription from him relating to the event – reading, ‘This museum was /wonderful and/is now even better/congratulations/Gerald Durrell’.

A first edition, first printing published by Rupert Hart-Davis and The Book Society in 1956. A fine book without inscriptions. One bump to one corner. Beautiful fine copy with rich top stain. In a fine unclipped wrapper (small mark to the front flap). A touch rubbed to the extremities. A remarkably good book and wrapper.
