First UK edition, first printing. Published by Osgood, McIlvaine and Co in London, 1895. This is a very good copy. Unfortunately lacking the dust wrapper, the original buckram boards are worn at the corners and spine tips, with some repair work to the top. The gilt tooling of the title character is bright and clean. The rough-cut text blocks are mostly clean though so slightly toned. The internals are clean and densely illustrated throughout. Pasted into the front is a folded sheet, with a ship painted and sketched by the hand of Masefield and handsigned ‘For Reyna on her birthday, from John Masefield’. It is a beautiful and highly skilled piece, with a stunning vibrancy to it. The recipient is Reyna, whom the 1983 collection of ‘Letters to Reyna’ is dedicated. ‘Reyna’ is in fact Audrey Napier-Smith, the violinist and long-term correspondent of Masefield’s. Overall, this is a fine association with a touching, well-thought and sentimental artwork. This is a very good copy.
