First edition, first printing of A Certain Smile by Francoise Sagan, published by John Murray, London in 1956. This is a near fine copy free from internal inscriptions, with minor pushing and fading to spine tips, pushing to bottom corners of front and rear boards, offsetting to front and rear end papers, toning to the text block and spotting to the top edge. The very good unclipped wrapper is finely illustrated, with open tears to head and foot of the spine and knuckles of front and rear flap folds, fading to the spine, browning to front and rear flaps, evidence of internal restorations and damp staining.

A Certain Smile by Françoise Sagan is a bittersweet novella about Dominique, a young Parisian student who drifts into an affair with Luc, the charming but married uncle of her boyfriend. As their romance unfolds, Dominique experiences both the exhilaration and the heartbreak of love. Sagan’s elegant, melancholic prose captures the fleeting nature of passion and the inevitable disillusionment that follows, making this a poignant exploration of youthful longing and emotional awakening.
