First edition, first printing. Published by the University of London Press Ltd. in London, 1946. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper is finely illustrated by C. Walter Hodges and has not been price clipped, showing the original 6/- net price. There are mild creases throughout and slight separation at the spine tips and corners. Though a beautiful wrapper, this example is fragile. The original publishers boards are bound in blue cloth, with the bright gilt unicorn motif to the front panel. There are slight scratches to both panels and slight fading. The text blocks are toned due to poor paper stock, though markedly clean considered (and free from foxing). This copy is free from previous owners inscriptions. Overall, this is a very good copy of an iconic childrens title. Scarce.
Set in 1842, it features a recently orphaned teenage girl who is sent to the manor house of her cousin and guardian in the West Country of England. The estate, village, and vicinity are shrouded in mystery and magic; the “little white horse” is a unicorn. Goudge won the annual Carnegie Medal from the Library Association, recognising the year’s best children’s book by a British subject. It has been adapted for film and television.
