Dorothy Hartley – Food In England – First UK Edition 1954
£325.00
First edition, first printing. Published by Macdonald in London, 1954. Without the dustwrapper. This is a near fine copy. In the original publishers cloth, the spine is slightly toned in places but the cloth and gilt remain bright. The text blocks are markedly white, though foxed at all edges. The internals are bright, though the front fly is slightly toned where the wrapper sat. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in near fine condition.
It is both a cookery book and a history of English cuisine. It was acclaimed on publication; the contemporary critic Harold Nicolson described the book as a classic. It has remained in print ever since.
