Description
A first edition, first printing of ‘City’ by Clifford Simak, published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London in 1954. A near fine book free from internal inscriptions, slightly cocked boards bound in original publisher’s black cloth with silver titling to the spine, pushing to spine tips, the text block with some browning and spotting, foxing to prelims. In a very good unclipped wrapper with two repaired closed tears with a little nicking. Rare science fiction first edition with a superb dust wrapper design.
City by Clifford Simak is a classic science fiction novel that explores the decline of humanity and the rise of intelligent animals, particularly dogs, as Earth’s dominant species. Through a series of interconnected stories, the novel traces humanity’s retreat from cities and technology, seeking a peaceful, rural existence. Over time, dogs, enhanced with intelligence and communication abilities, inherit the Earth, while robots maintain order. Simak’s work is a thoughtful meditation on civilisation, progress and the future of humanity.
