First edition, first printing. Published by Michael Joseph in London, 1957. This is a very near fine copy. The dust wrapper, strikingly designed by Broom Lynn has some light wear at the spine tips and sight rubbing to the top edge. There is one small closed tear to the bottom edge. It has not been price clipped and retains the original 13s 6d net price. There is one small patch of soiling to the rear panel, and some very very slight handling marks. The boards are free from notable wear, looking presentable in the original publisher’s cloth. The gilt titling is bright at the spine. The text blocks are pristine aside from a small spot to the bottom edge, and a slight darkening to the top right-hand corner. The signature of British crime writer Robert Barnard is present to the front fly leaf in blue ink. The author’s signature is on the full title page, inscribed as follows: “Frequently referenced as The Three Cornered Hallo– how curious people are? For Robert Barnard, in nation [?] super memory of Catholican [?] days […] Christianna Brand. Signature of the author. Who would guess? 1984’. It is signed in black ink and gives an insight into the relationship, if there was one [!] between two significant British crime writers of the 20th century. Unfortunately, the words which would define this relationship are difficult to define… Overall, this is a very near fine copy of a fine association copy.
