A first edition, first printing of The Unfortunates by B.S. Johnson, published by Secker and Warburg in association with Panther Books in 1969. A near fine example, the box has text on the inside, publication details on the inside left, and on the right-hand side is printed a “newspaper clipping” from the author. The original wraparound band is a pale lilac, with slight rubbing to the join, it contains the 1st, last and 25 other sections of the book, the 25 sections being intended to be read in random order. Wear to the spine.
Unlike traditional novels, “The Unfortunates” is presented in a fragmented and unconventional narrative style.
The book is structured as a “book in a box.” It consists of 27 unbound sections or chapters that are meant to be read in a random order.
The novel is a semi-autobiographical account of the narrator’s visit to the city of Nottingham to report on a soccer match. However, it is also a reflection on memory, friendship, and the passage of time.
