First edition, second printing of Westmorland Heritage by Alfred Wainwright, published by the Westmorland Gazette, Kendal in 1988. This is a near fine copy, with black and white illustrations by Wainwright throughout, boards bound in original publisher’s sage green cloth with gilt titling to the spine, slight pushing to the head and foot of the spine, very mild browning to the text block. The very good wrapper with fading to the spine, pushing to the spine tips and corners, some light handling wear.
Westmorland Heritage – Popular Edition by Alfred Wainwright is a richly illustrated tribute to the historic county of Westmorland, a county devolved by Whitehall in 1974, much to Wainwright’s chagrin and regret. Originally published in 1975 as numbered and signed editions of 1000 copies, it explores the landscapes, towns and villages of the area through Wainwright’s detailed drawings and descriptions. The book captures the essence of Westmorland’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, offering readers an intimate look at its picturesque scenery, architectural landmarks and rural charm, reflecting Wainwright’s deep affection for this part of England.
