First edition, first printing of The Outlying Fells of Lakeland by Alfred Wainwright, published by the Westmorland Gazette, Kendal in 1974. This is a near fine copy, inscribed and dated on the front free end paper in black and blue ink, boards bound in yellow/green mock leather with gilt titling to the front board and spine, the text block with slight browning and mild spotting to the fore edge, with ‘reader’s personal log’ to the rear, illustrated throughout with black and white maps and drawings by Wainwright. The very good unclipped wrapper with fading to the spine, chipping to the spine tips and knuckles of front and rear flaps, some browning to the front and rear panels and spine.

The Outlying Fells of Lakeland by Alfred Wainwright is a guidebook focused on the lesser-known hills and fells surrounding the central Lake District. Published in 1974, it features detailed maps, sketches and descriptions, offering insights into 56 walks suitable for casual walkers and enthusiasts. Wainwright’s charming hand-drawn illustrations and personal commentary provide an intimate and accessible way to explore these quieter, scenic areas, highlighting his passion for the beauty and tranquility of the Lake District.
