A first edition, first printing published by Gollancz in 1946. A very good book, with a previous owner’s inscription and date in black ink on the front free end paper. Spotting is evident to the fore-edge of the text block. In very good, unclipped wrapper showing some loss to the head and base of the spine and corners with some browning to the spine.

An historical novel set in 17th-century England during the Civil War. The story follows Honor Harris, who becomes entangled in love and intrigue amidst the turmoil of war. Paralyzed from an accident, she navigates betrayal, loyalty, and secrets alongside her enigmatic lover, Sir Richard Grenvile. With vivid historical detail and gripping suspense, du Maurier crafts a tale of passion and sacrifice against the backdrop of a nation torn apart by conflict.
