A first edition, first printing of The Citadel by A.J. Cronin, published by Gollancz, London in 1937. This is a near fine copy free from internal inscriptions, boards bound in the original publisher’s black cloth, tarnished gilt titling to spine, minor pushing to the head and foot of the spine, bumping to lower corners of front board and rear panel, the text block with some browning throughout. The near fine wrapper with toning to the spine, chips to the spine tips and knuckles of front and rear flap folds, an internal open tear repair to the spine. With rare wrap-around band declaring, “Overnight Sensation!! Cronin’s novel about Doctors”, with short open tear and chip to upper corner of toned spine, larger chip to base of front fold.

The Citadel by Dr. A. J. Cronin, published in 1937, is a compelling novel about Dr. Andrew Manson, a young idealistic physician in a Welsh mining town. Manson confronts medical and ethical challenges, battling corruption and incompetence in the healthcare system. His journey towards personal and professional integrity highlights the struggle for reform in medicine. The book’s powerful narrative and critique of medical practices significantly influenced public opinion and contributed to healthcare reforms in Britain.
